All promotions must be approved by the Office of the Professional Standards. When considering approval for a promotion, PS will check the following:

1. The candidate meets the necessary requirements for all ranks previous. (This could mean that a candidate is retested with a rank entry exam).

2. The candidate will not be skipping any ranks. (i.e. If a Police Constable was put forward for the rank of Inspector)

3. The candidate has in fact been a member of the community for the specified amount of time

4. The candidate has in fact been in their current position for the specified amount of time for eligibility. Exceptions to these criterion may be made under extenuating circumstances. For example, if a senior team member who is vital to the runnings of a division or divisional group becomes unable to serve their duty, the team member with one rank below them will take their place. If there are more than one team members in that below position, then the team member with the longest membership of the position will move into their place. Further exceptions may be made if the candidate has shown an outstanding passion and attitude towards their position. However, the candidate must be approved by PSD, and they may only skip up to one rank superior. (i.e. A Sergeant could go no higher than Chief Inspector). This exception does not apply to those occupying the ranks of Superintendent, or Chief Superintendent.
